At first, Lars Mittank looks just like any other vacationer as he makes his way through Bulgaria’s Varna Airport. Wearing shorts and a t-shirt and carrying a hold-all bag, he strolls along casually as if nothing were amiss. But that soon changes.
But then, in a bizarre twist, surveillance cameras capture him sprinting back in the opposite direction, his luggage nowhere to be seen. He’s then spotted looking disorientated outside the airport before he climbs over a fence into a nearby forest. That was in June 2014, and the vacationer hasn’t been seen since.
Mittank, from the German coastal town of Wilhelmshaven, was 28 when he and a group of friends flew to the Bulgarian seaside resort of Varna. On June 30, 2014, the group touched down beside the Black Sea.
