Unfortunately, the Miss Universe 2015 pageant in Las Vegas is remembered for one thing and one thing only: the colossal on-air mistake which saw the wrong woman crowned and left viewers everywhere cringing in their seats. But 2015 was also the year that Miss Universe launched the hashtag #ConfidentlyBeautiful. And as the campaign went viral, beauty queens from across the world went make-up free to prove that every girl deserves to feel comfortable in her own skin. These 20 contestants might have been stripped of all their glamor, but in the words of current Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach, every one of them is still “confidently beautiful with a heart.”

20. Francesca Cipriani (Miss Ecuador)

“Feeling amazing in my own skin” was the caption that Francesca Cipriani used for this Instagram picture of herself going totally makeup-free in her car. And Cipriani sure has plenty to feel amazing about: in addition to being Miss Ecuador, the 23-year-old beauty is also an international business management engineer.

19. Refilwe Mthimunye (Miss South Africa)

Refilwe Mthimunye was voted “Best Smile” by her fellow Miss Universe contestants, and her Best Smile can still light up a room even without the aid of red lippie. It’s clear that this beauty queen has no qualms about going completely barefaced either – she submitted not just one but several photos to Twitter’s #ConfidentlyBeautiful hashtag.
