It’s a sobering fact: every year 1.2 million dogs in U.S. animal shelters are euthanized because they can’t find a home. Pat Gregoire, a volunteer at Los Angeles’ Baldwin Park Animal Care Center, is memorializing those that don’t make it by taking these hugely moving last photos.

Gregoire takes photos of Baldwin Park’s adoptable pooches to post on social media. A few years ago she arrived early at the shelter to capture the more tragic side of its activities, which is usually hidden from public view.

Because it was too early to be open to the public Gregoire was one of the few people there. She stopped outside one kennel before a staff member came to remove its seemingly calm canine occupant.
