With a whopping $200 million budget – making it the most expensive movie ever made at the time – Cameron went to town on the movie, with stunning special effects, picturesque set designs and unparalleled cinematography. He even had a reconstruction of the ship made to capture its real-life qualities.
However, what really set it apart was the fictionalized love story between Rose DeWitt Bukater (played by Kate Winslet) and Jack Dawson (played by Leonardo DiCaprio). With its blurring between reality and fiction, Titanic had audiences’ pulses racing, hearts beating and adrenaline pumping.
Spoiler alert! It is not surprising, then, that the movie’s director James Cameron is still talking about one of his greatest achievements in cinema – not least that controversial ending. Many cinemagoers still bemoan the finale due to the fact that Rose doesn’t make room on the door for Jack – ultimately leading to his death.
