But the naysayers were wrong, as Pratt eventually married Montag in November 2008. The pair had eloped in Mexico; as befits a couple who had made their names on reality television, they then had a second ceremony for the cameras with their friends and frenemies all present. The filmed ceremony took place on April 25, 2009, and Heidi live-tweeted the proceedings to boot. “This is going to be the best day of my life,” she wrote at the time. “Thank you God for Spencer.”
And while the follow-up wedding may not have really captured exactly how “Speidi” had tied the knot the first time around, it’s worth noting that The Hills itself wasn’t allegedly all that real anyway. In 2015, for instance, a talent manager for the show told Complex magazine that “80 percent of the [series] was scripted.” However, Montag and Pratt actually did legitimately seem to love each other; their marriage, it appeared, was intended to be for keeps.
And the fairytale remained intact for a while, anyway – at least, until 2010. That’s because, in July of that year, Montag filed for divorce from Pratt. Come September, though, the pair were very much back on. As it turned out, the split had been carefully calculated; the couple had figured that divorcing might net Montag a lot more media attention.
