Known for her heartfelt and confessional songwriting, Kelly Clarkson has never been one to keep her feelings pent up. So when she launched into one of her most personal numbers at a March 2019 gig in Greenville, South Carolina, fans knew to expect an emotional rollercoaster. Little did they know, however, that the star’s show would get even more poignant.

It’s not often that you get a pop star whose major selling point is their rawness and vulnerability. And yet Clarkson is the exception that proves the rule. Certainly, ever since hits like 2004’s “Since U Been Gone,” the singer has garnered a following of fans tuned into her own combination of angry rock-inflected pop with personal lyrics.

Clarkson was born in April 1982 in Fort Worth, Texas. And it all started for the fledgling singer when she signed up to the first ever season of American Idol in 2002. As the inaugural winner of the contest, she became a champion of potential pop stars chasing their dreams. Yet Clarkson joined the competition out of financial necessity, rather than any desire to make it big.
