Markle for her part had obviously heard of Prince Harry – everyone has – but she had no idea if the date would go well. “I didn’t know much about him and so I asked [my friend] when she said she would set us up, ‘Is he nice?’ If he wasn’t kind it didn’t seem like it would make sense.’” But she found him very nice indeed. The date, which took place in July 2016, went perfectly.
After that, things moved fast. Just a few week later, Harry invited Markle to spend a few days away. But this wasn’t a weekend in the country like most young adults would enjoy – it was a trip to Botswana. That’s what you get when dating a prince! “We camped out together under the stars and enjoyed five days together,” Harry reminisced in the interview.
Those five days, Harry said, were “absolutely fantastic.” They started to fall in love during that time. “We were really by ourselves, which was crucial to me to make sure we had a chance to get to know each other.” Once they got back they continued their relationship but tried to keep it as low-profile as possible. However, they weren’t successful.
