Over the next few years, the pair’s respective careers went from strength to strength. By 2014, in fact, the couple had sold a total of 300 million records. They also began moving in high circles and even attended the inauguration of President Barack Obama in 2009, where Beyoncé sang “America the Beautiful.”

However, while things were flying high in their professional lives, behind closed doors Beyoncé and Jay-Z faced struggles. For instance, sometime around 2010 she suffered a miscarriage. In her 2013 documentary Life is But a Dream, Beyoncé said that the episode was “the saddest thing” she’d ever experienced.
