“It is not right that a few months into a relationship with him that Ms. Markle should be subjected to such a storm,” the unconventional statement continued. “[Harry] knows commentators will say this is ‘the price she has to pay’ and that ‘this is all part of the game.’ He strongly disagrees. This is not a game – it is her life and his.”
There was a very personal reason why Harry might have “strongly disagreed.” It’s always been speculated that the prince’s frosty relationship with the media is due to the death of his mother, Princess Diana. When Diana died in a car crash in France on August 31, 1997, the paparazzi were present at the scene.
In August 2017 – the 20th anniversary of Diana’s death – Harry appeared on a BBC documentary called Diana, 7 Days. There was something he wanted to address. “I think one of the hardest things to come to terms with is the fact that the people that chased her through into the tunnel were the same people that were taking photographs of her,” he said.
