10. Shelley Duvall – The Shining
There are many ways to coax an actor into looking convincingly terrified on screen, from strong motivation to an intense shooting environment. But Shelly Duvall was genuinely terrified as Wendy Torrance in The Shining because Stanley Kubrick put her through hell.
He kept her away from the rest of the cast, shot one take an infamous 127 times and even told the crew not to sympathize with her. The experience may have put Duvall off acting for good. Indeed, neighbors in her home town of Blanco, Texas, told the National Enquirer she can still be seen walking around “looking dishevelled, strange and totally crazy.”
