Infinity War was a movie many years in the making, everything the Marvel Cinematic Universe had been building up towards. But it was also – spoiler alert – an absolute gut-punch for some. The ending wasn’t simply downbeat, it was completely horrifying. The heroes failed in their quest and paid the ultimate price. But what actually happened? And what does it mean for future Marvel movies?
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a franchise with some serious clout. Huge stars appear in it – Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury and Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow to name just a few. It’s made stars out of some fairly unknown actors, too. Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth became A-listers after being cast as Captain America and Thor respectively.
Infinity War united almost all the major Marvel heroes: the Avengers, the Guardians of the Galaxy, Black Panther, Spider-Man and more. It was a huge venture… and a profitable one. Indeed, Infinity War ended up taking in over $2 billion, and it’s now the fourth highest-grossing film of all time.
