From the books to the films, the Harry Potter franchise has garnered a huge fan following over the years. Although its magical world has captivated audiences young and old since the first book’s release in 1997, it was really the movies that made the young wizard into a global sensation. But with a tapestry as rich and intricate as this, it’s no surprise that many of the films’ more obscure details may have escaped you. So here are 20 that are sure to surprise even the most ardent Potter fan.
20. Not showing her age
Unlike the other children in the Potter films, Moaning Myrtle was different for one very specific reason: the actress playing her wasn’t 14. In fact, she was considerably older at the time. The ghostly witch was portrayed by Shirley Henderson, who was 37 when filming took place.
19. Celtic influence
The wands in Harry Potter are an integral part of the story’s mythology, so it’s no surprise that great deliberation was taken over them. So much so, in fact, that the main characters’ wands all correspond to their individual birthdays – by way of the Celtic tree calendar. Harry was born on July 31, so his wand is made out of wood and holly. Ron’s ash wand, meanwhile, shows that he was born in March, and Hermione’s vine wand reflects her September 19 birthday.
