It’s been half a decade since Taylor Lautner was last seen on screen as Twilight’s hunky werewolf Jacob Black. Since then, however, the actor hasn’t shape-shifted into the leading Hollywood star some suggested he would go on to be. So, why hasn’t the heartthrob’s career lived up to those lofty expectations?

Before answering that question, though, it’s worth taking a look back at Lautner’s résumé to date. And, as it turns out, the future star had another passion before he even made his screen debut: martial arts. Specifically, at just six, Lautner started to take karate lessons; he was awarded a black belt in the discipline, meanwhile, when he was only eight years old.

The young Lautner was something of a karate prodigy, in fact, having already emerged victorious in three Junior World Championships by the time he was 12 years old. While on the cusp of his teenage years, though, Lautner set his sights on a career in film. So, his family made regular jaunts from Michigan to Los Angeles, in order for the aspiring actor to make auditions.
