Popular TV drama The Waltons followed a rural family in Virginia for over two decades, detailing their joys and troubles to a captivated audience. No-one expected it to succeed – John Walton actor Ralph Waite was told “It will never sell” – but succeed it did. And although the last Walton story aired in 1997, the show never quite left the public consciousness. Sadly many cast members, including Waite, have since passed on, but read on to find out what the surviving Waltons are up to now.
10. Richard Thomas (John-Boy Walton)
Richard Thomas played John-Boy Walton, who was pretty much the main character of the show. In fact, John-Boy was based on the life of show writer Earl Hamner Jr. And not only did the role earn Thomas an Emmy, it ensured him fame for years to come.
There was a brief period where Thomas left The Waltons and was replaced by Robert Wightman, but he was back before too long. And while he’s still an in-demand actor today – you can catch him on shows like The Americans – he admitted to Closer in 2015, “They will say ‘John-Boy dies’ in the news when I’m gone.”
