The average salary for a National Hockey League player is reportedly just over $1.5m. Naturally, however, there are numerous ice hockey superstars who can expect to earn well in excess of that. But who are they? Take a look at the sport’s 20 highest-paid players as of the 2016-17 season.

20. Ryan O’Reilly – $7.5m

Ryan O’Reilly spent six seasons with the Colorado Avalanche after being selected by the franchise in the 2009 draft. The younger brother of fellow NHL professional Cal O’Reilly then moved to the Buffalo Sabres. As alternate captain there, he helped the struggling team regain their form.

19. Jason Spezza – $7.5m

Jason Spezza spent his early career switching between the National and American Hockey Leagues before settling in the former with the Ottawa Senators. The centerman guided them to the Stanley Cup Final in the 2006-07 season. He then switched to the Dallas Stars in 2014.
