Looming large amid the thick forest of north-east Germany, this gargantuan structure dominates the landscape. Dwarfing the trees which surround it, the other-worldly construction stands more than 350 feet tall.
Situated around 40 miles south of the German capital of Berlin, deep in the Brandenburg countryside, the epic building was once an aircraft hangar. It has a fascinating history – but perhaps what’s most incredible about it is the purpose it serves today.
The land surrounding the dome – formerly known as the Brand-Briesen Airfield – was put to use as an airfield by Germany’s Nazi regime in the 1930s. Constructed during the build-up to the Second World War, it was used by the German air force as a training center for new Luftwaffe pilots.
