“I knew deep down that if I didn’t take the leap to pursue this dream,” the explorer told National Geographic, “I would have always be left wondering what if.” And so it was time to turn his dream into a reality.

The best place to put his plan into action? Ambrym, a volcanic island that’s part of Vanuatu’s so-called “Ring of Fire.” On the island’s Marum crater is a fierce lava lake that would be photogenic – if only a photographer could get close enough.
