Jimmy Carter is best known as the 39th President of the United States, and he held this position for four years from 1977. But much less remembered is the service that Carter gave in the U.S. Navy as a young man. And his duties in the Navy were far from routine. In the years just after World War II, he was involved in one of the service’s most sensitive operations, as we’ll see.

Carter had fostered an ambition to join the Navy for some time, but gaining entry to the United States Naval Academy was no walk in the park. To improve his chances, after graduating from high school in 1941, he studied engineering at Georgia Southwestern College in Americus for a year and then went on to Atlanta’s Georgia Institute of Technology, where he took math classes.
