She’s country pop royalty and one of American Idol’s greatest ever contestants, but superstar vocalist Carrie Underwood has met with adversity in her life as well. Unfortunately, November 2017 proved to be one of those instances, after a nasty fall left her hospitalized. Now, for the first time, Underwood has spoken about her condition following the regrettable accident. And she’s taking a rather different approach than most would in her state…
She’s arguably the greatest success story to emerge from American Idol, and she’s broken records in the music business since she rose to prominence, but chart-topping country music star Carrie Underwood started off from humble beginnings. The Oklahoma native is a pure country girl through and through.
Born in 1983 Underwood enjoyed the little things in life as a kid. In her young adult years, the “Jesus, Take the Wheel” performer had aspirations of becoming a singer, but chose to pursue broadcast journalism at college instead. And while attending Northeastern State University, Underwood opted to take a crack at American Idol in 2004.
Needless to say, it was a wise decision. Underwood’s sweet voice and likable persona took her all the way to the final of the popular talent show, ultimately edging out Bo Bice to become the fourth winner in the program’s history. In the ensuing years, Underwood would go on to overcome the American Idol jinx, which had seen winners fail to live up to the hype after the show ended.
There were no such fears when Underwood dropped her debut album in 2005, entitled Some Hearts. In one fell swoop, she proved that she could replicate her TV success in the studio – culminating in a record that has since been certified platinum multiple times.
But that was just a taste of things to come. The music industry really began paying attention to the feisty vocalist when she released the 2006 single “Before He Cheats.” It saw Underwood gain recognition from the business, landing her two prestigious Grammy Awards for her efforts.
Since then, Underwood has continued to go from strength to strength. Countless awards and chart-topping hits later, she’s now known as one of the most successful country music performers of all time. However, in November 2017 Underwood’s life took a turn for the worse…
Just two days after co-hosting the CMA Awards, Underwood had a nasty accident at her home – a painful fall that broke the singer’s wrist. She also suffered cuts and bruises, and the star was subsequently rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Underwood’s husband Mike Fisher immediately got on the nearest plane to be by her side, aiding his wife on the road to recovery. The fall from the steps outside her home certainly limited Underwood’s movements, but it didn’t stop the Grammy winner from putting out a quick tweet to her fans on November 12.
The Twitter post read, “Thanks so much for all the well wishes everybody…I’ll be alright…might just take some time…glad I’ve got the best hubby in the world to take care of me.” With her husband of seven years there for support, Underwood prepared for surgery on her wrist a couple of days later.
After the operation was over, Underwood filled her fans in on how it had gone. Thankfully, it was a success. And Underwood was full of appreciation for her family and those who took care of her while she was being operated on.
She told her Twitter followers, “Had surgery on my wrist yesterday & all went well…even though I’ll be setting off airport metal detectors from now on.” It was refreshing to see that even in troubled times, Underwood could still look on the bright side of things.
Underwood added, “I’m so thankful for the doctors, nurses, family & friends who’ve been taking such great care of me.” her steely determination undoubtedly helped her overcome the adversity, along with the assistance of some fine medical professionals nursing her back to health.
This clearly proved to be a relief for many of Underwood’s fans, following the worrying press release that had been put out just three days earlier regarding her unfortunate tumble. It had read, “On Friday night, Carrie Underwood took a hard fall on some steps outside her home.”
The statement continued, “While there were no life-threatening injuries, she was taken to the hospital to be treated. She sustained multiple injuries including a broken wrist and some cuts and abrasions from the fall.” Thankfully, though, it seems that those wounds won’t have a significant long-term effect on the singer.
As mentioned earlier, however, undergoing the necessary surgery did leave Underwood with metal in her wrist. Although she made light of the prospect of metal detectors going off at airports in the future, in reality it’s still an inconvenience that she’ll probably have to live with for the rest of her life.
Moreover, Underwood was also forced to make some cancellations in her touring schedule. The 34-year-old star was meant to perform at the Country Rising benefit concert the following weekend, but the fall meant that her scheduled appearance at the show had to be scrapped.
Still, the “Before He Cheats” performer isn’t letting it dampen her spirits – particularly during the festive season. Indeed, in December 2017 Underwood posted a picture of her son to Instagram, depicting him making some sugary treats in preparation for Santa Claus’ arrival.
The caption underneath the photo read, “Made Christmas cookies with the little man today. I actually don’t think I’ve ever made Christmas cookies before but this will definitely be a new tradition in the Fisher household! Newsflash: Isaiah likes frosting (shocker)!”
Underwood’s wrist-shattering fall definitely seems to have made her more reflective about her family life, though. For example, she also shared a very sweet video for her touching track “What I Never Knew I Always Wanted” in December 2017 – one that is made up of rare shots of Underwood, husband Mike Fisher and son Isaiah.
Nobody likes to be under the weather at this time of the year, of course. But Underwood has shown that it’s how you bounce back from those setbacks that’s the measure of a person’s character. You may be able to keep her down for a short time, but her fiery will to succeed ensures that it won’t be for long.
