Hollywood stars came out for the Golden Globes, but who took home the Best Dressed awards?

Many of Hollywood’s biggest stars came out for the 2020 Golden Globe Awards in January. Famous actresses, such as nominees Jennifer Lopez and Nicole Kidman, dazzled everyone on the red carpet with creative and ultra-stylish looks. It was a rollercoaster ride for fans of fashion. But which people wore the most talked-about outfits?

40. Rooney Mara

Rooney Mara, who attended with her boyfriend and Best Actor winner Joaquin Phoenix, wore black Givenchy Haute Couture. The highlight of her outfit, though, was a sparkling ear-muff-like headpiece. It was beautiful and eye-catching – even if it did draw comparisons to Queen Amidala’s elaborate get-ups in the Star Wars franchise.

39. Billy Porter

Billy Porter never disappoints on the red carpet. At the 2019 Golden Globes he wore a pink cape, after all. This year he chose a custom-designed white suit by Alex Vinash, with a feathered train requiring at least one person to carry it. It looked amazing – just don’t ask him to sit down in it.

38. Awkwafina

Awkwafina wore a black-and-white cocktail ruffled-collar dress from Dior Haute Couture. Just before the awards ceremony her stylist Erica Cloud told Vanity Fair magazine, “Originally we had wanted to find something colorful, but landed on the iconic pairing of black and cream which you can never go wrong with! We felt it looked elegant and effortless.” The star also took home a Best Actress award for The Farewell.

37. Shailene Woodley

Big Little Lies star Shailene Woodley wore a bright blue thigh-slit Balmain dress for her appearance on the Golden Globes red carpet. She teamed it with some Bulgari jewellery and a Tyler Ellis clutch, plus she went with Balmain again for the shoes. It was a truly impressive (and sparkly) ensemble.

36. Kirsten Dunst

Kirsten Dunst, who was nominated for On Becoming a God in Central Florida, wore a beautiful soft-pink Rodarte dress to the Golden Globes. Her makeup artist Mary Wiles told Allure magazine ahead of the show, “We wanted the beauty look to feel very modern and simple. More runway, not so red carpet. We wanted to look clean, beautiful, and classic, but modern at the same time.” Achieved!

35. Salma Hayek

Salma Hayek wore a blue-and-cream Gucci dress for the red carpet, one very complimentary to her figure. A few days later the actress told the Spanish-language TV show Un Nuevo Día that the outfit was so revealing simply because, “I’ve gained a lot of weight and that’s where the weight goes on me… my back is not happy, believe me.”

34. Helen Mirren

Catherine the Great actress and Best Performance in a Miniseries or Television Film nominee Helen Mirren chose a fabulous red floor-length Dior dress for the Golden Globes, accessorized with a necklace from Harry Winston. Alas, at one point the lovely gown developed a rip, and none other than Meryl Streep was spotted helping Mirren with her wardrobe mishap.

33. Gugu Mbatha-Raw

Gugu Mbatha-Raw of TV series The Morning Show wore a spectacular yellow sequin dress from Gucci, with makeup perfectly tuned to match. Stylist Nick Barose told website The Cut on Golden Globes day, “Our inspiration was a little bit Dorothy Dandridge, a little bit Diana Ross. Armani Beauty Rouge D’Armani Matte Lipstick in 401 was the perfect orange lipstick to play off the yellow Gucci dress and Gugu’s golden complexion.”

32. Joey King

Joey King’s Golden Globes dress was a truly amazing creation. The actress, star of TV series The Act, wore a black-and-white 3-D printed gown by Iris van Herpen, and it drew plenty of positive attention. Vogue magazine raved about it, announcing, “The striking couture piece was the icing on the cake that introduced the world to a brand new star.”

31. Jennifer Aniston

Jennifer Aniston’s dress was custom-made by Dior, and it was no easy feat. After the design was put into place by the fashion house’s creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri, three talented seamstresses worked for 200 hours on the piece. But hopefully they would agree it was definitely worth it in the end. People loved the outfit.

30. Jason Momoa

Actor Jason Momoa came to the Golden Globes in a green Tom Ford suit jacket, but it wasn’t what he wore, it was what he did with it that counted. During the ceremony, he whipped off the velvet jacket and handed it to his wife Lisa Bonet. Underneath was just a tank top – and, of course, those famous muscles.

29. Winnie Harlow

Victoria’s Secret model Winnie Harlow wore a black, backless dress from LaQuan Smith, along with jewellery from Lorraine Schwartz and high heels from Louboutin. Her gorgeously contrasting makeup was done by artist-to-the-stars Adam Burrell, and fans might be glad to know her Eylure Silk Lashes cost just $12.

28. Rachel Weisz

Award presenter Rachel Weisz, whose husband Daniel Craig was up for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy, chose a custom black-velvet Tom Ford dress for her appearance at the Golden Globes. But it was accentuated with sparkles, both the silver on the front of the gown and the 211-diamond Harry Winston necklace she was wearing.

27. Gillian Anderson

Gillian Anderson wore a cream-colored Safiyaa dress which looked great on her, but many people singled out her “backlace” – a necklace worn backwards – as the best part of her outfit. Later Anderson thanked her stylists on Twitter, saying, “Thanks to all the fab people who helped make my look come together.”

26. Cynthia Erivo

Harriet star and Golden Globe nominee Cynthia Erivo wore a Thom Browne tuxedo dress, one that took 800 hours for its creators to make. Her stylist told Vogue, “The tuxedo is quintessential Thom Browne, but the layered sequins, crystals and pearls are a way for Cynthia to let Harriet shine.”

25. Laura Dern

Laura Dern had a very good time at the Golden Globes, one can assume. She received the Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture award for Marriage Story, and she wore a gorgeous custom-made dress from Saint Laurent. She documented her night for Vogue, and noted she was “thankful for the artists I get to collaborate with.”

24. Ana de Armas

Knives Out newcomer Ana de Armas, up for a Best Actress award, chose a sparking floor-length Ralph & Russo dress for her first Golden Globes. She also wore jewellery from Tiffany & Co and shoes by Jimmy Choo, making it an extravagant and exciting debut for her. But best of all, though, her dress was designed with pockets.

23. Zoe Kravitz

Zoe Kravitz opted for a Saint Laurent dress with two sets of polka-dots, one variation on the top and one at the bottom separated by a bow. Reportedly, Kravitz’s beloved pet dog Scout later escaped the actress’s hotel room and crashed the Golden Globes after-party, but hopefully he didn’t damage her stylish gown.

22. Naomi Watts

Naomi Watts went Old Hollywood for her appearance at the Golden Globes. She wore a very sparkly Armani Privé dress and hair inspired by 1930s-era actress Carole Lombard. The star’s makeup artist Jillian Dempsey told TV show E! News, “The reflective quality of her dress helped inspire the overall look. Naomi has beautiful features and I wanted to show them off.”

21. Jodie Comer

Killing Eve star Jodie Comer wore a large, puffy-sleeved green dress to the Golden Globes, placing her hair in an updo to really show off the gown. Alas, as soon as Twitter saw it, jokesters instantly started to compare her look to the “Baby Yoda” character from Star Wars show The Mandalorian. Comer probably gets the last laugh there though, seeing as she was actually in a Star Wars movie.

20. Wesley Snipes

Usually the women get the most attention on the Golden Globes carpet, but Wesley Snipes won one for the men. His berry-colored suit and pink ruffles gained plenty of praise, with GQ magazine declaring it was a look “that will appear on nostalgia Instagram accounts in years to come, if we’re still doing that sort of thing.”

19. Zoey Deutch

Zoey Deutch of Globe-nominated TV show The Politician stood out on the red carpet with a bright yellow gown from Fendi and contrasting blue jewellery. Everyone was impressed, and Harper’s Bazaar magazine named Deutch one of the best-dressed actresses of the evening, saying she “gave a lesson in making a statement with color.”

18. Michelle Williams

Michelle Williams was pregnant at the time of the Golden Globes, and she wore a light orange silk crepe dress by Louis Vuitton, one with an eye-catching blue flower on the shoulder. It didn’t distract from her baby bump, but rather enhanced it. And even more people got to see the dress when Williams collected her Best Actress award.

17. Renée Zellweger

Renée Zellweger needed to choose her Golden Globes dress carefully, as it had to hide a swollen ankle. She wore a pretty blue Armani Privé dress, floor-length of course, and it did the trick. Plus, she walked away at the end of the night with her fourth Golden Globe in hand.

16. Kaitlyn Dever

Kaitlyn Dever, who was nominated for her performance in Netflix series Unbelievable, arrived for the show in a beautiful Valentino dress. Her hairstylist Bobby Eliot declared in a press release, “The gown has the most beautiful intricate flowers and crystals from head to toe, so we wanted to keep the hair super-effortless and easy, but swept up to showcase the details of the dress.”

15. Lucy Boynton

Lucy Boynton’s Louis Vuitton silver dress was beautiful, but close-up it was even more so. It was made with 15 meters of velvet, plus silk and yarn, but embedded deep within the design there were also 8,000 very small glass beads. Unsurprisingly, the gown took at least 400 hours to create, but it achieved an amazing ice-queen effect for the actress.

14. Phoebe Waller-Bridge

Double Golden Globe-winner Phoebe Waller-Bridge wore a shining black-and-gold tuxedo, but what she announced about it afterwards made waves. She said to the media backstage, “We’ve hatched an amazing plan with Ralph & Russo, our Australian designers, who made this incredible couture suit, which is the most extraordinary thing I’ve ever worn. And we’re going to auction it, and the money that is raised from it will go toward relief in Australia.”

13. Margot Robbie

Margot Robbie wore a deceptively simple Chanel dress to the Golden Globes. Although the skirt part was just plain white, the upper part was actually made of 4,750 tiny crystals. Wow! And even though the dress had pockets, Robbie took her hands out to show off her nail polish, which was also Chanel

12. Kerry Washington

Kerry Washington opted for something incredibly daring. Her black Altuzarra outfit, complete with belly chain, was unlike anything anyone else had on. And the risk seemed to pay off. Harper’s Bazaar declared, “Washington gave a whole new meaning to the phrase risky business. And we’re totally digging the updated definition.”

11. Greta Gerwig

Director Greta Gerwig, the person behind the movie adaption of Little Women was expected to win a Best Director nomination for that film. Very surprisingly, she didn’t – but she turned up anyway, wearing a black-and-white Proenza Schouler dress and looking great when she faced the people who had snubbed her.

10. Olivia Colman

Olivia Colman won a Golden Globe for playing Queen Elizabeth II in the TV show The Crown, and appropriately enough she was wearing a designer who many real royals adore. Emilia Wickstead – who helped put together Kate Middleton’s maternity wardrobe – wrote on her Instagram after the win, “Olivia is wearing a bespoke Emilia Wickstead dress in raspberry textured cloque.”

9. Saoirse Ronan

Saoirse Ronan was desperate to wear Celine for the Golden Globes, and luckily her fashion people listened to her. The actress was given a beautiful golden 1970s-style gown for the occasion. Stylist Elizabeth Saltzman told Vogue, “We wanted to celebrate Saoirse’s femininity, while being powerful and a little bit sexy.”

8. Priyanka Chopra Jonas

Priyanka Chopra Jonas and her husband Nick Jonas were one of the best-dressed couples at the Golden Globes. The actress wore a bright pink Cristina Ottaviano gown, with hair styled to compliment it. Her stylist Christian Wood told Hello! magazine, “As soon as I saw her stunning pink gown and beautiful diamond necklace, I knew it had to be old Hollywood shiny waves with a deep side part for the Globes!”

7. Charlize Theron

While many people on the Golden Globes red carpet chose subdued colors, Charlize Theron instead wore some very bright ones. Her apple-green-and-black Grecian-style dress from Dior Haute Couture definitely caught a lot of people’s eyes. And unsurprisingly it took at least a week for the fashion house to create.

6. Scarlett Johansson

Marriage Story star Scarlett Johansson was nominated for a Best Actress award thanks to her work in that movie. She decided to walk the red carpet wearing, well, red. Or perhaps scarlet? She had on a custom-made Vera Wang gown and a Bulgari necklace made from white diamonds to accompany it.

5. Gwyneth Paltrow

Gwyneth Paltrow wore a tan-colored Fendi dress to the Golden Globes, and even though people could see her underwear, that was clearly part of the look. Harper’s Bazaar declared, “Just when we thought the naked dress had died a death, Gwyneth Paltrow has offered a new interpretation of it, giving the popular red-carpet look an elegant, more modest twist.”

4. Cate Blanchett

Best Actress nominee Cate Blanchett wore a beautiful and highly unusual dress to the ceremony. The Mary Katrantzou creation had a circle around the shoulders cascading down the back, making the mind jump towards the image of a sun. The fact that the gown was in a beautiful shade of yellow only added to that idea.

3. Taylor Swift

Cats actress Taylor Swift opted for a yellow-and-blue floral-patterned Etro dress. And, unlike Cats, it was a hit. Teen Vogue magazine wrote, “While it might only be the first week of January, Taylor’s floral gown is giving total springtime vibes and – we have to be honest – we can’t really complain about a little bit of sunshine during the coldest season of the year.”

2. Nicole Kidman

Nicole Kidman, who was nominated for Big Little Lies, opted for a bright-red Custom Atelier Versace dress which stood in contrast to her husband Keith Urban’s simple black suit. And she wasn’t afraid to show off her legs in the custom creation, as the split up to her thigh attested.

1. Jennifer Lopez

Hustlers star Jennifer Lopez wore an intriguing creation to the Globes – a Valentino gown decorated with massive green and gold bows. Some people critiqued it online and wrote it off as a fashion misstep, along with her hairdo, but others loved how bold it was. One thing’s for certain: it was very much talked-about, just like a good red carpet dress should be.
