Kristen Bell Surprised Dax Shepard On Ellen – And His Response Made Them Super Emotional

It’s arguably not often that Hollywood romances have happy endings. But after almost 12 years together, Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell have thus far proven that their relationship is an exception to the rule. And in January 2019 Shepard turned up on Ellen, where a certain special guest was waiting in the audience. What’s more, the cute moment that followed shows just why Shepard and Bell are pretty much couple goals.

While many stars seem to struggle to sustain long-term relationships, Bell and Shepard have been going solid for over a decade. And since they first began to date in 2007, the pair have steadily become one of our favorite celebrity couples. However, it wasn’t all love notes and sweet nothings when they first met.

Indeed, while speaking to Flare in 2013, Bell revealed that her initial encounter with Shepard at a birthday dinner had left her a little underwhelmed. “[It was] not electric,” she admitted to the publication about their first meeting. And Shepard hadn’t been overly impressed, either, as he bluntly revealed during a 2015 chat with Good Housekeeping.

“[Bell and I] have such different backgrounds [that] it’s comical,” Shepard told the magazine. “Until I was 32, I thought the world was just wolves – that there was no way anyone was acting with any kind of benevolence. When I met [Bell] and her friends, I was suspicious of their unbridled happiness. I thought, ‘Something stinks here; they’re in a cult.’”

And it’s perhaps not hard to see why there were initially so few sparks flying between Bell and Shepard. After all, their lives up until that point had been so different. Shepard, for instance, had begun making a name for himself in 2003, when he got his big break on the popular prank show Punk’d. Then in the years that followed, he made the jump to movies, with roles in comedies such as 2004’s Without a Paddle and 2006’s Employee of the Month.

But after the cameras stopped rolling, Shepard went out and painted the town red. In fact, during the early part of his career, he partied hard and led a reckless lifestyle. “From 18 to 29, I was a heavy smoker, drinker, drug addict, terrible eater and philanderer,” the actor admitted to Playboy in 2012.

Then, as Shepard got older, the star began reevaluating his life choices – especially his habit of staying out for entire weekends. “I lived for going down the rabbit hole and meeting weird people,” he explained to Playboy. “Of course, come Monday I would be tallying up all the different situations, and each one was progressively more dangerous.” So, how has Bell’s life compared to that of her former bad-boy spouse?

Well, the star had a wildly different start to both life and acting than Shepard. Bell was raised by a religious family, for one thing, and attended Catholic school. Then, after studying musical theater at New York University, she made the move to Broadway. And by the age of 22, she’d already appeared on stage with respected thespians such as Liam Neeson and Laura Linney.

Like her future hubby, Bell then went on to star in the occasional comedy, such as 2008’s Forgetting Sarah Marshall. However, it was in the teen TV drama Veronica Mars that the star truly found her place. Running for three seasons between 2004 and 2007, the show became a cult classic and helped elevate Bell’s name in Hollywood.

But along with being a musical theater prodigy and a teen idol, Bell is also a hardcore Disney fan. In 2013, then, the actress’ dream of being in one of the iconic studio’s movies came true when she voiced Anna in the megahit Frozen. That film pushed Bell further into the limelight, too, arguably making her a global star in the process.

So, all in all, Shepard and Bell seemed to be each cut from different cloth. But nevertheless, the pair’s differences didn’t stop them from developing a mutual connection. And a couple of weeks after their lousy first meeting in 2007, another chance encounter brought them back together.

It seems, too, that Bell and Shepard found a good time to get together. After 11 years of debauchery, you see, Shepard had called quits on his party-boy lifestyle back in 2004. When he and Bell had their first date, then, the star had been three years sober.

And although Shepard’s wild reputation could have been enough to put Bell off, she was seemingly enamored with the comedian. She went to adorable lengths to endear herself to him, too. For instance, the Frozen star learned to ride a motorcycle to impress her hog-loving future husband – despite having no interest in the pastime herself.

That being said, the pair weren’t exactly the picture of a happy couple at first. According to Bell, they used to get into arguments frequently – many of which ended with Bell dramatically storming out. The two even split up just three months into their relationship only to get back together days afterwards.

“[Shepard] was a drug addict, and he was wild. And I was very much a good girl who went to Catholic school,” Bell revealed to Flare. Shepard shared a similar outlook on their first months together to Playboy. “All the things I’d done were terrifying to her,” he admitted. “And she had a hard time believing I would ever be able to stay married and monogamous.”

Ultimately, though, Bell was able to overcome her fears. And, two years after they started dating, the pair proved that they were ready to take the next step in their relationship by getting engaged. But the wedding bells would have to wait, as Bell and Shepard decided to hold off on tying the knot in support of gay marriage legalization.

In the meantime, the couple cemented their romance with the birth of a daughter named Lincoln, who arrived in 2013. Writing on Twitter that year, Shepard joked about his child, “She has mom’s beauty and dad’s obsession with breasts.” Bell, meanwhile, poked fun at her fiancé’s past with her own Twitter announcement. “My new roommate poops her pants and doesn’t pay rent… basically [Shepard] pre-sobriety,” she wrote.

Then, on October 17, 2013, Bell and Shepard finally tied the knot in a Beverly Hills courthouse. But while many celebrity couples go to great lengths to throw the most lavish weddings they can, the new parents took a much more restrained approach. “All in all – with fuel to get there – $142 out the door,” Shepard admitted of the cost of their wedding that year on Jimmy Kimmel Live!

Then, just one year after getting hitched, Bell became pregnant once again; her and Shepard’s second daughter, Delta, arrived in December 2014. And thanks to a series of adorable Instagram snaps, the couple’s fans could feel like they were there at almost every step of the labor and birth.

Furthermore, the duo have since found even sweeter ways to share their relationship with the world. In 2016, for example, Bell and Shepard appeared together in an ad for Samsung in which they put the company’s home products up against their daughters’ dirty laundry. The following year, the couple even released a parody music video based around their love for Game of Thrones – which included full-blown costumes.

But although Bell and Shepard appear to have it all, no marriage is perfect. In fact, Bell admitted to Good Housekeeping that she and her hubby have attended couples’ counseling – and that it’s helped them grow as partners. “You don’t figure out how to cook without using a recipe,” the actress joked during the interview. “The way [we] argue now… is so healthy.”

Meanwhile, in a 2017 interview with Today, Shepard seemingly agreed with his wife. “If I had to sum [my marriage] up in one word, it’s work,” the actor revealed. However, he added, Bell’s good nature has been a key part of what makes their relationship work, and this in turn has allowed him to really open up. “[Bell] is inherently kind… and I know that, and so I can trust this person with my fears and concerns,” he added.

Likewise, Bell has seemingly discovered a lot about herself just by being in Shepard’s company. “At first I was attracted to the way he made me feel, and now I’m attracted to the things I learn from him,” the star told People magazine in 2018. “[I’m] decidedly confident I chose the right person.”

And along the way, Bell and Shepard have naturally marked several milestones together – perhaps the most recent of which was Shepard’s 44th birthday in January 2019. What’s more, even though Shepard would be spending part of the day filming a segment on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Bell still wanted to show her husband her appreciation. In fact, the actress had planned a little surprise for Shepard – and it would lead to perhaps the pair’s most lovable show of affection yet.

It’s true, too, that Shepard’s appearance on Ellen started in a spectacular fashion. How so? Well, it’s worth noting here that Shepard is a huge fan of Brad Pitt. So much so, in fact, that he had previously expressed his admiration for the star to DeGeneres, who had then presented him with a painting of the two men together during a 2014 episode of her program.

During Shepard’s 2019 Ellen interview, however, DeGeneres really outdid herself. After coyly asking the actor if he still had a crush on the Fight Club star, the host brought out Shepard’s birthday gift: a set of overalls emblazoned with an image of a shirtless Pitt. “Oh my goodness,” was Shepard’s startled response. “I’m going to need… cardboard undies.”

Then, following the reveal of Shepard’s unusual present, DeGeneres moved on to another segment of the show. Aptly named “Dr. Dax,” the bit involved the actor taking questions from the audience and offering sage advice. But after fielding a few queries from members of the public, the star spotted a more familiar face in the crowd.

Rising from her seat to rapturous applause was none other than Bell – and she had a particularly personal question in mind. “Dr. Dax, I was curious if,” Bell began, but Shepard was in a playful mood. “Could you state your name?” he jokingly interrupted. “Kristen Bell,” his wife replied. “B-E-L-L. What would you recommend getting someone very special, like a spouse, for their birthday?”

And just to clarify her question, Bell continued, “Or how would you spoil them on their birthday?” At this point, Shepard tried to make his wife squirm. “In the bedroom?” he quipped. But Bell proved a little too unabashed for his playful trap. “Let’s say I have ‘in the bedroom’ covered,” she coyly answered.

However, as the audience responded with laughs and whoops, Bell did her best to steer the conversation back on track. “No, outside the bedroom,” she confirmed as the crowd regained their composure. Then Shepard took a moment to consider his wife’s question, although it didn’t take long for him to come up with an appropriate answer.

But while Shepard’s previous responses had been marked by his trademark humor, he now began speaking from the heart. In fact, the comedy star let Bell know just how much of a positive difference she had already made to his life. And in doing so, Dr. Dax gave his patients in the audience a severe case of the feels.

Staring Bell straight in the eye, Shepard truly opened himself up to the room. “I would say please, please, please give that person love and support for 11 years, [and] give them two beautiful girls,” came his honest reply. Having visibly hit a nerve in Bell, who had begun tearing up, Shepard then let his wife know that she didn’t need to do anything more to make his birthday special. “And you’re good,” he concluded.

And although the show’s audience sighed their appreciation to Shepard’s sentimental response with a chorus of “aww,” it was Bell who understandably had the most poignant reaction to his sweet words. Still standing in her place, the actress looked lovingly at her husband across the room as she tried to process his touching admission.

But it seemingly wasn’t just Bell who had been affected by Shepard’s declaration. As she fought to hold back the tears, she noticed a glimmer in her husband’s eye as well. “You’re crying too!” she exclaimed as Shepard’s poker face began to crack. Visibly embarrassed, Shepard responded, “You sit down, young lady. We’ve heard enough of your questions.”

Apparently more than happy with her husband’s response, Bell returned Shepard’s admission with a simple “I love you” before returning to her seat. But although their moment together was touching to watch, Shepard couldn’t help but slip in some of his signature self-deprecating humor. “See! We had to bring [Bell] on my birthday so that people would come,” he joked to DeGeneres.

And while on Ellen, Shepard and Bell proved yet again just how charming they can be. Certainly, when the clip of the TV appearance made it to YouTube, many viewers commented on just how moved they had been by the pair’s interaction.

“Just when you thought Dax and Kristen couldn’t get any cuter, they go and make people cry with just a few simple words,” wrote one user. Another commenter concurred, writing, “Can we please get these two on the show more? Their love for each other honestly melts my heart.”

Yet while Shepard may have received arguably the best gift a husband could hope for, his birthday was far from over – as the Ellen clip shows. After having pulled Bell out from her place in the audience, DeGeneres led the pair over to the stage, where a cake was being wheeled out. Then, to a refrain of “Happy Birthday to You,” Shepard leaned over to blow out the candles – only to receive one last surprise.

Suddenly, a clown leapt out from a hidden compartment inside the cake, making Bell and Shepard jump back in shock. But the couple’s fright soon gave way to a fit of giggles as they caught on to the joke. “I started getting suspicious,” Shepard revealed. “Well, that made my birthday much better. Now it’s a great birthday.”

After over a decade in each other’s company, then, it’s safe to say that Bell and Shepard are still able to make each other laugh. And although their path together may have been challenging at times, they’ve come out the other side as one of Hollywood’s strongest couples – and we couldn’t be any happier to see how their love has endured.
